Event gives to kids, receives good matchups Series: GOLF Dave Theall St. Petersburg Times November 29, 2006
Last weekend's Chi Chi's Charity Classic was a big success in more ways than one. Primarily, the two-day event is a fundraiser for the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation, which tries "to instill good values and discipline in children's lives in their formative years, as well as to provide them with a good education." Toward that end, 250 golfers teed it up Sunday and Monday at the Chi Chi course in Countryside. They also benefitted from a clinic put on by veteran tour pro Chi Chi Rodriguez himself, who hosted the event along with foundation chairman Tom James and master of ceremonies Dick Crippen. In a blind-draw format, where only nine of the 18 holes were scored, Ray Goodman, director of the County Golf Association, teamed with low handicappers Jim Hunter, Gil Day and Ray Lopez, all of Clearwater, for Sunday's win at 9 under. But that score only tied the team of Mac Fairchild, Bill Burks plus Harold and Jim Grossnickle, which led to a chip off won by Hunter's team. That same team came back Monday and again scored 9 under, but lost by a stroke to the team of Tim Tremblay, Chad Nixon, Budgie Clark and Hunter Reehm.
